Christians Falling But Not Utterly Cast Down

The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord: and he delighteth in his way. Though he fall, he shall not be utterly cast down: for the Lord upholdeth him with His hand. Psalm 37:23-24 KJV

Those two verses are full of great and precious promises to God’s people. Verse 23 starts off by showing us the sovereignty of God. God is in total control of His creation.

Our very steps are ordained and set into motion by God. A saved person who is following the Lord has a blessed promise that each step is guided by our Father. We as God’s children should always strive to follow Him. God can see out life from beginning to end and He knows the best order for our steps.

The verse ends by saying that the Lord delighteth in this good man’s way. This means that God is pleased with a person who follows the way He has ordered for them.

Verse 24 tells us three great truths. First we see that we will fall down sometimes in our life. When God saves a person their soul is saved and they have a new nature.

The reality is however our flesh is not saved. A true Christian hates sin in the inward man, but our old flesh still loves it.

That is why we must die daily and put the old man down.

I John 2:1 tells us that when we do sin, we have an advocate, one who pleads our case before God on our behalf.

Our advocate is Jesus Christ the righteous. The Bible does not excuse sin, but it does let us know that sin is still going to affect God’s people.

Second, this verse tells us that utterly we will be cast down. The word utterly means to cease to be, to be finished, to perish or consume.

We know that God chastises us when we sin, but we have blessed assurance that it will not utterly destroy us.

There are groups who teach falling from Grace. This is a lie from Satan. I praise God that our fall is not utter destruction.

Lastly, we see the reason we will not fall utterly. The Lord upholdeth us. Salvation is started by, performed by, and kept by God. We are not saved by any works of our own hands.

We are saved by Grace and we are kept from utter ruin by that same Grace. Though a righteous man fall seven times, he will get up. This blessed promise is not a free ticket to sin, but a comfort and security to all who are in Jesus Christ.

Amen!
